The prostate gland, which is normally about the size and shape of a walnut, surrounds the urethra between the pubic bone and the rectum, below the bladder. The prostate gland secretes a fluid that is discharged with sperm. As the prostate grows larger, it may press on the urethra. This narrowing of the urethra can cause some men with prostate enlargement to have trouble with urination. Prostate enlargement or Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) may be the most common health problem in men older than 60 years.
In Ayurveda prostate problems symptoms are classified in two terms
1. Mootrakruchra meaning difficulty in urination
2. Mootraghata which means suppression of urination.
Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Avoid drinking more liquids after 6 pm to reduce the need to urinate frequently during the night.
- Drink 8 glasses of water a day to help prevent bacteria from accumulating in the bladder.
- Alcohol, tobacco, coffee increase vata and vitiate it. Hence avoid alcohol, tobacco and coffee, especially after dinner.
- Avoid foods which cause constipation as constipation causes vitiation of vata.
- Have safe intercourse frequently. Ejaculation will remove prostatic fluid and shrink the prostate
- Avoid prolonged sitting
Ayurvedic home remedies you can try:
- The silk from corn has been used by Amish men for generations as a remedy for the symptoms of prostate enlargement. When fresh corn is in season, cut the silk from 6 ears of corn. (Corn silk can be dried for later use, too.) Put in 1 quart water, boil, and simmer for ten minutes. Strain and drink a cup. Drink 3 cups a week.
- The Amish use watermelon tea (watermelon seeds) to flush out the system and help with bladder problems and prostate problems.
- Soak in a warm bath or hot tub for 20 minutes (maximum) two or three times per day. The heat of the water will penetrate the prostate to reduce swelling and promote healing. (Don’t exceed 20 minutes at a time, as this can lead to sperm motility problems and possible infertility).
- Drink cranberry juice 4 times a day to increase the acidity of the urine, especially if you feel a urinary tract infection coming on.
